Blog Assignment 5-A

The first image seen here is the re-frame of the second image.  This image is a painting made by the artist Salvador Dali.  For this assignment we had to take one of the images from the sound-scape projects and re-frame them in some way.  For this I cropped the photo and rounded the edges of it with white.  I was drawn to the original photo because when it comes to Dali's work, there are a lot of crazy things happening in each picture and they are always fun to look at.  I chose to re-frame this picture in the way that I did because it changes the direction that the picture is going, and because it take out most of the craziness that happens when looking at the whole thing.  The framing of it also makes you focus more intensely on the elephant which is barely noticeable in the original picture.  I think that Salvador Dali framed the picture in the way that he did because he wanted the eyes of the viewer to focus on all of the things that are happening in it instead of just focusing on just one, or even two things.  One of the main things that was changed by the reframing was the line of the picture.  In the original the lines move in several different directions, such as towards the girl and to the left across the top.  In the re-framed picture the line simply goes to the left across the top.  The elephants trunk points that way and leads your eyes in that direction.  Another thing that changes was the visual movement and rhythm.  In the re-framed picture if at all it seems that the elephant is just walking across the picture to the left side.  In the original picture there is much more movement.  The fish is jumping out of a pomegranate and a tiger is jumping out of the fish towards the girl.  There is also another tiger jumping at her, and of course there is the elephant still walking on the top.  The space in the re-framed picture did not seem very deep at all.  It seemed as though after the elephant the space did not go on very much at all.  In the first picture the space seems like it goes on a lot farther past everything that you can see.  Some affinity is obvious between the two because of the elephant but the contrast is much greater because there are a lot more crazy things happening in the original pictures.  In the original there is a lot of tension because the tigers are diving at the woman and the gun is also pointing at her.  In the re-framed one there is pretty much none what so ever

  1. Good analysis and reframing of this photo. When she first showed this in class I didn't pay that close attention and missed the stilt-elephant until she specifically pointed it out. Good job in highlighting it, because I think the surreal stuff Dali comes up with is better than the use of some of the more grounded elements in his photo like the lady and the tigers here. I think your reframing highlights one of the strangest and most intriguing parts of the painting.
